Closed for the Holidays

Farmers Markets are closed this weekend for the holidays. I was able to snatch a few watermelon radishes from a local grower (see header picture). I had never had them before and although hesitant when I bought them, I was pleasantly surprised at their flavor and amazed at how beautiful they are. I can't wait until next weekend so that I can buy some more! They are delicious!

  1. You're hubby showed me that pic. Beautiful shot! I love the color and the macro gives a good sense of the texture which convey's the turnipy/radishy texture. I would have guessed this was a dye job.

So I'm guessing that's a particular "breed". I wonder how the radish turns red and continues to preserve the green color as it grows. Amazing :)

  2. It is a particular breed. It is a watermelon radish. I had never seen them before and when I cut into it I just had to take a picture. Of course, it was the perfect excuse to use my new Nikon micro lens :-). I hear the seeds are difficult to find. I am going to talk to the farmer that I bought them from next weekend to see where I can get some. The outside of the radish is white but the inner skin is green and their taste is mild.
